Rubio had a worldview that, in his own words, entailed that letting Russia win in Ukraine would create a world that was more dangerous by establishing the precedent that large countries can conquer their neighbors.
I'm not even sure it's the power for guys like Rubio so much as the perceived prestige and recognition that come with the position. But he should have been observant enough last time around to see that those qualities don't stick to Trump's people.
That's plausible, I believe that status anxiety is the main driver of MAGA in general. The idea of tying your fate to Trump of all people in search of prestige seems ridiculous, but these people clearly all have some kind of cognitive distortions.
That could be it, there was a story the other day alleging that he's "upset" at supposedly being the last to know everything. It all seems very foreseeable and avoidable, but I guess the temptation of power is just too strong for guys like him.
