With 5.3, all of the missing features from OCaml 4 have been restored, except for those that had been deprecated (native 32-bit backends).

What're the restrictions on this syntax? Does the scrutinee of the match have to be an application (the way that match_with required a function and an argument)?

No restrictions. The scrutinee may be an arbitrary expression. See for example https://github.com/ocaml-multicore/effects-examples/blob/8a7e80dd29e68e2d05fe4b0399c8535a51f36395/generator.ml#L61

Without syntax support, we needed a way to delay eagerly evaluating the scrutinee expression. Hence the function + argument taken separately. With the syntax, we no longer need that, and it just works just like you’d expect of the match..with syntax.

Would love tips! Am starting with backend first where the newer work is. Also the frontend is fairly complex with synchronized audio playback, recording, speed/pitch shift etc which I don't want to touch atm. I do want to rewrite the notation DSL parts of it which I'll do at some point in ocaml.
