I had an alt-right Libertarian coworker back in the day. He'd ask me about whatever new hot thing he heard about, and would be furious when I said "idk I'll have to read up on it to have an informed opinion".
The fact that I would say that bothered him so much, and it happened a lot
Typically it was some form of an attempted gotcha on "the libs", that when you're fully informed on the topic is a gross mischaracterization for propaganda.
Even in good faith though, it's never made sense for me to talk about something I wasn't knowledgeable on 🤷♀️
I adopted this "I don't know" idea in college, and have stuck to it pretty heavily, and you're 100% correct. I've encountered this several times. In my experience it has been overwhelmingly with right-wingers, but that's obviously anecdotal.
