The facts are literally written in stone: visit any old cemetery. Look for graves before 1950. Lots of children. After the 50s & vaccines, children's graves are rare.
The consequence of the triumph of medical science: people do not remember that the threat of death was constant, epidemics common.

In a college biology class, we took a field trip to an old cemetery, recorded the dates of the death and the age of death, crunched the numbers, and confirmed that exact finding. That was in 1975. Obviously, I never forgot that lesson.

I recognize that being born in the late 1960's was extremely fortunate. So many diseases avoided, new vaccines being created, not losing friends to pathogens.
