I was in the hospital for 38 hours. Bill was over $81,000. Wanted to see what could have possibly cost that much but they refused to give me an itemized bill. I'm sure the price gouging was astronomical. My copay was $275.

You can go to your insurance website and look at the itemization there. You’ll have a patient portal, from there you have to figure out where your insurance keeps that info. Be aware you may also stumble across stuff you don’t necessarily want to know.
I’ve just got back from taking my 80 something mum to hospital after a bad fall. Over the course of 3 hours we saw 2 nurses, 2 doctors & had 2 lots of x-rays & saw the doc within 15 minutes of the X-rays. All of this cost £0, the staff were unfailingly kind & gd humoured.
The UK NHS is wonderful 🏆
Took care of an American trauma victim with no insurance in Toronto. Final bill before transfer to US. $150,000. All costs waived by Surgeon, Anaesthetist and hospital and absorbed by Ontario. Patient didn't even have to pay for air ambulance. Why would you want it any other way? Happens a lot.
