This actually makes sense in a very counter intuitive way. Conservative/capitalist interests know they can’t win on a Republican ballot so they try to kneecap progressives and defang democrats into complacency.

Because, believe it or not, party affiliation matters less in places like the Midwest. Of course it’s a factor, but a straight-shooting, community minded politician can easily win across both sides of the aisle in places like that.
