There’s a fairly common belief among Evangelicals that Jesus’s second coming will involve slaying hundreds of thousands of God’s enemies. I can’t shake the feeling at this point they’re disappointed Jesus wasn’t violent during His first coming. They want a war god that kills their foes.

I knew a guy in grad school whose whole hope for the Resurrection was the idea that he would get to ride beside Jesus slaying "heretics" like he was riding beside Aragorn slaying orcs.

I couldn't believe he was misreading two such beautiful texts so badly.
