Here's my problem: If you have a list of romance books and the books on that list that are very much NOT romance are all written by Black authors, then people looking at the list think Black authors can't write romance.

And we see this happening a lot because people are lazy list makers.

And someone told them they have to be "diverse" and make their lists more reflective of reality. But that doesn't mean put stuff on them that doesn't belong. If you want a ROMANCE list (central love story, happily ever after) there are PLENTY OF AUTHORS who are Black and write exactly those books.

The list comes with expectations because all of the NOT BLACK AUTHORED books on there fit that criteria. Why would you move AWAY from those parameters when adding Black authors? You've set up a list to be a certain thing. Every author on that list should fit that theme.

I think it could be both. But we DO see people putting what's his name on romance lists all the time. Sparks. (I legit had a brain freeze!) So, that is lazy list making. I think it's the same here. But I'll also say: on a list of 1,859 romance books, 89 were written by Black authors.

I agree! I've been specifically seeking out books with very little romance in them (but I like relationship fiction) and they are very hard to find with the way books are marketed
