I'm a historian. I know change happens. And it's still just plain breathtaking to live through the intentional dismantling of public higher ed in the USA.

I've long said that the privatized market-model cannot work in education since it relies on informed customers and the "customers" for education are definitionally ignorant until (hopefully) they have been educated.
People who assumed certain things had been stably and irreversibly achieved will be surprised at how much can be dragged back to a 1904 American South status quo once rotten enough people get the power to do it.
They have been applying the corporate model for decades, at the peril of the institutions, and the forced decline seems to be accelerating in recent years.
The dismantling has been 40+ years in the making and in its place a cabal of donors from Wall Street and the billionaire class have installed pro-corporate, neoliberal vocational training modules that are antithetical to a real education.

The thing about keeping people ignorant and depriving them of support is, it means you're the only game left in town to turn to.
