Cancelled. What if you want to direct extra attention to a particularly meaningful part of a meaningful section? Or if something strikes you the second time through? Or if parts of a passage relate to two different things, one annotated with highlights and the other with underlines?

My dad used to do this but color coded underlines - I think he was grouping according to base topic - I think it amounts to just a mental queue 8

I do this with books that I’m rereading. I generally underline the first time I read a book. If I go back and read that book again a few years later (sometimes through a different lens, or just having learned more), I highlight it.

I’m guessing highlight was first pass things that interested him, and then underline was subsequent things that rose above. This one page is MOSTLY both, but some is highlighted without being underlined. This page might just be very relevant to him.
