Oh David Lodge. Sad news. A great, wise, funny, kind, generous Midlands writer who did something rare in committing to both academic and popular writing.

Loved him and all his books. Any Brit academic who’s worked in the USA will find his 60s novel Changing Places still both relevant and hilarious. And US profs in Britain the same. And a serious accessible critic too. Sad loss. RIP
RIP. Loved Changing Places (parents thought it was quite racy..), Nice Work (brilliantly dramatised for TV and starring Warren Clarke and Hayden Gwynne), and more recently particularly enjoyed Deaf Sentence.
What a lovely man and what a great legacy! He caught 80s Birmingham to perfection as Rummidge. And when I lived there in the 90s, he was so supportive of young writers in the city.
