With SteamOS already shipping with third-party handhelds (see: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/593110/view/529834914570306831), I don't think we're too far away from seeing SteamOS supported on a wider range of hardware. I'd definitely have a dedicated Steam machine under my TV!

theoretically you can still install the old debian-based version of it, but it'd be outdated AF and probably not run much.
i *think* they were open to the idea of opening up the new arch-based version, but they're wanting to focus on solidifying support for steamdeck for now.

i mean if you just open up big picture mode on a linux PC, it'd basically be the same experience 🤣 particularly so if you went with an OS with the KDE Plasma desktop (cuz that's what steamdeck's desktop mode is). I'm on Mint and Plasma doesn't play nice with Mint so 😔

i think if steam really really wanted to, they could be a real competator for windows.

also been very much meaning to move over to linux, but i haven't had the time :(

Several others I know have been on Mint including my mother without issue. Some have been on Neon, not sure about issues there though. I've been gaming & arting on Mint since 2024 without too much issue beyond some hyper-specific audio hardware things that are only really relevant for streaming.
