One of the most surprising findings was that elite employers explicitly sought out candidates who were active in sports to circumvent anti-discrimination laws surrounding disability and select new hires who, in a country with generous paid sick leave, were perceived as healthy enough not to use it.
We propose the idea of the paradox of egalitarianism, where elite gatekeepers in countries with egalitarian norms and social supports feel license to engage in overtly discriminatory actions.
