I think Gen Z might be the first generation to be truly disconnected from the old Black cultural experience (unless they were raised right). These kids don’t know Black classic films, tv, music, imagery, nothing.

💯 Not making xcuses, but as a father of 3 I can say it’s not easy. When I was their age I’d find the Jet or Ebony mag that my parents bought. Or flip though pops albums. Or watch reruns of Good Times, Jefferson’s, etc on 1 of the 5 TV stations we got. Today, they have the world at their fingertips.
Truth. From what I’ve seen and heard, a lot can be put on their Gen X and Xennial parents. It could be modern tech, but our Gen of parents are trying to still be cool and come off hip to what’s new, rather than sharing what they grew up with.
The kids listen to their music in cars not their parents
My son gets his choice M/T, I get W/Th/F. “Today we’re gonna learn about modal jazz/New Orleans R&B/early hip hop/James Brown/classic Motown/etc.” Each commute to school becomes a lesson in music history and exposure to musical legends. One of my favorite parts of the day with him.
they didnt fail, they just couldnt compete with different relationships to integration & perceptions of privilege that the younger gens have — it's hard to institutionalize Cultural Blackness without ancestral wealth.
Some of my older family members didn't bother to "teach" or carry on anything from past generations. So a few of us are tapped in and others are not, ain't our fault tho.
