inhibits their ability to move. this theory is important to our understanding of many disabilities and how society creates them. however, it cannot account for psychosis and many severe mental illnesses. there is no equivalent of a ramp or a wide sidewalk for the psychotic among us

no accomodation can be given to me that will make me not disabled. the disability is inherent in who I am. there are things that the world could do to better accommodate me, but at the end of the day, i remain disabled and there is not much that can be done about it.

this does not mean that I am not deserving of respect, help, dignity, or any of the other things that are lauded upon people with disabilities who fit the social model. it just means we need a better model, not hide psychosis and SMI under the rug.

I can think of accommodations which help mental illness a little, starting with reforming the welfare benefits system, and a lot of improvements to medical and social care. But I'll always be severely disabled no matter what you do. Mostly physical disabilities, also PTSD and neurodivergence.

Yeah, the social model feels more like it should be, "and this is how society disables us further", not, "only visible disabilities count and everything is fixed with a wheelchair ramp." I'm a wheelchair user & I'd still be severely disabled with maximum accommodations, they just take the edge off.

And if you're in a wheelchair there's always some "disability police" wanker in a store with a phone waiting to see a leg move or the person stand up for a moment to get something off a shelf.
If I catch someone doing that in person, there will be hell to pay.

I've been attacked too many times to risk that. Two of the attacks could have killed us (my partner pushes me) if the driver had braked half a second later.
