I know there’s a lot of folks out there who are like ‘it’s just a hamster’ but any animal you invite into your home is family and deserve vet treatment ASAP if they are sick. No animal should suffer or be in pain and if you can’t provide that, don’t get a pet. - ThreadSky

Buffy update- she’s still here! She bit the shit out of the vets glove and then pissed blood all over her which could be tested. It’s thought that it is likely to be a UTI but could mean her kidneys aren’t doing good. We are trying a round of antibiotics

I wholeheartedly agree — i have 2 cats (that i’ve had since i was 7) and a dog (whos just a year younger), i also had a hamster who passed a few years ago.
I don’t think some people fully understand that pets are family 🧡

I agree. But sadly not everyone thinks about animals like that. I had to put down one of my cats due to a medical condition unexpectedly for those vary reasons you listed. I'm glad Buffy is doing well and you have more time with them.

It’s alarming how common that outlook is with people. Small pets especially are considered easily disposable and i wish these kinds of people would stop getting pets.

It is astonishing to me how casually hamsters are waved off as a disposable pet. I've developed an aversion to mentioning my hamsters to average folks because they ALWAYS volunteer how their hamster 1) was mean and bit them all the time 2) died weirdly. I so badly want to go "IT WAS YOUR FAULT."

Unsurprising- goldfishes are one of those animals like rats or rabbits that people assume are easy to care for but actually have very specific needs and much more space than people realize. They're also prolific 'polluters' so small tanks are REALLY bad for them!

reach a size of anywhere from 10 - 15" in length, which would make it so that they wouldn't even be able to turn around in say, a 15 gallon tank! So yeah, that would definately limit their growth in that they'd probably die before being able to reach full size. :(

OH! So that's kind of an 'old wives tale' with some truth behind it. Basically, imagine you got a baby ferret. You put it in a small plastic hamster cage (not good for hamsters either but i digress). I can't imagine it would live very long nor grow to its full size all cramped up. Goldfish-

All of this 100%. Also I honestly have massive respect for those who take in pets like rodents who are bound to leave you after a few years regardless of their health, I'm not sure if I could deal with that. Even more so of course when they're taken in from a rescue shelter on top of everything.

100%, plus she's not "just a hamster" she's your hamster, you know her, her personality, you love her, as people who own pets should feel. When you love something you want to take care of them no matter what.

Some people just see pets as objects and that's something I can't wrap my head around.
