The internal drives on the new Apple machines are much faster than any external drive you can get so the premium price has some rationale. But there’s no reason things like Dropbox need that speed. I did opt to pay the premium and get a larger internal drive for just this reason.

ya i keep my dropbox on an external SSD but it would barely make a difference for me if it was instead on the 12TB 5600rpm garbage seagate platter i store my pirated music on instead. it certainly doesn't need to be on the ultra-fast internal ssd

I have external nvmes for my Mac Studio running in the fastest thunderbolt 4 enclosure I could find and can only get it to about half the speed of the internal drive. I don’t need the speed of the internal drive but there are now many things that need to be on it, so I went with a larger internal.

Drive is broken in that way but I still sync drop box on an external raid. I’m running sequoia. Not sure how I’m avoiding that

there have been various workarounds but I'm not sure about the current status of them. I'm nervous to risk it because that change would basically break my entire professional workflow

it doesn't help that there's no way to roll back OS updates beyond a complete format + restore either. there is a reason so many people have PTSD-like symptoms about updating Apple software (or any software really)!
