We let our son watch that before we did. We had already seen Howl’s Moving Castle and figured oh cool, another! Oops. 😬 I watched it with him one day and was like well shit, sorry for the trauma kiddo.

I got lucky; that movie was my first exposure to Studio Ghibli. I was in my 20’s and it was on cable. I still have one kid young enough not to watch it, but parts of Mononoke are freaky no matter how old you are. Fascinating the way those concepts were illustrated, though. True art.
Miyazaki always has something to say. Howl’s Moving Castle is partly about his opposition to the Iraq war. He centers an older woman on purpose. Mononoke deals with social class and the environment, and is quite feminist. His frustration is very clear in some of his interviews. He’s a treasure.
