Abortion was only taken up as a cause by the "Christian" right recently, well within my memory, after they mostly lost the battle to keep teaching evolution/ science out of schools.

Evangelicals when I was growing up usually saw abortion/ birth control as things only Catholics cared about.

Even the Bible prioritizes the mother's life over the fetus in Exodus 21. But most of these 'Christians' only pay attention to less than 1/2 of the Commandments and only one line in the entire book of Leviticus, so... there's that.
