If your car hasn't preconditioned then (almost every) EV will take extra power from the charger to heat up the battery, but that initial period will still be slower & it's better for battery health to precondition on the way.

Ah, I see - I was thinking along the lines of "Well just dump 20kW into the thing and make it toasty within a minute" - but I guess the battery can't take such a rapid temperature rise, which makes perfect sense.
