I once met Tom Cruise- and the most striking thing about him was how βTom Cruiseyβ he was. Like he was doing an impression of Tom Cruise. It was really something. Iβve met many other actors and have never had the same feeling. Oh Tom Jones. Heβs very Tom Jones. But not an actor.
I made the mistake to talk with my brother to a drunken neighbor about what a shitty movie Cocktail was. And he wasn't stood up picked up his chair smashed it on the deck we were on and said cocktail is a great movie and then stormed off. You're a class act Gary Sluise. Rip.
Is this the same as in Love Actually when Liam Neeson's character is told by his late wife to date Claudia Schiffer, and nobody mentions how much his later girlfriend Carol looks like her.
On a similar note, I couldn't help noticing that no-one involved in the Ares III mission to Mars expressed any concern that including Private Ryan in the crew might lead to them having to save him.
I saw someone I hadn't seen for ages the other day and when we finally realised who we were she said "oh, you didn't look like you" I replied "neither did you" π
Then thereβs the flip side - how much Tom Cruise doesnβt look like the character he is playing, eg Jack Reacher who is supposed to be a giant of a man. (Still great films though!)
Improve, definitely, because, let's be honest, you'd be thinking why is Tom Cruise at this rather mundane nuclear storage facility and stop worrying about minor concerns like security. You'd be hoping he'd break out into dance like in Risky Business.
there's a Chuck Palahnuik book where a character compares his experience to Fight Club and another character complains about it, it becomes a running joke. Book is otherwise mediocre though so I think Chuck had to mock himself.
All movies take place in an alternate universe otherwise identical to ours except missing the actors cast in it, and anything else relevant.
I thought that was always implied. With rare exceptions like Being John Malkovich (anything meta like that) the actor never exists in the movie's universe.
What I love about Christian Bale. His performances are amazing and you don't know it's him.
Same with Johnny Depp in Black Mass and Blow. Val Kilmer as well.
I commuted through Waterloo for 10 years, was often tempted to shout βdownβ and see who ducked. π
However I did manage to miss the filming! π
This is particularly uncanny in Vanilla Sky when he points out the Joni Mitchell painting to Penelope Cruz. He then holds up another painting and says he did it.
I always expect Penelope Cruz to say: You mean this is a Tom Cruise too?
I also want them to comment when a character is replaced, something like βyou look different from the last time I saw youβ βoh, yeah? Maybe, I did get a haircutβ
Lol! Personally, I love Tom's acting style. He is always Tom no matter who he is playing. Biggest surprise for me was him playing rock star Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages. Awesome!!
This is something I've always struggled with in film/tv! I think it was triggered off when Les Dennis joined Coronation Street in 2014 and no one at all asked "is that Les Dennis?"
"His Girl Friday" does exactly that, there's a scene where Cary Grant is on the phone describing another character -- played by Ralph Bellamy -- saying "He looks like that fellow in the movies, you know ... Ralph Bellamy!"
They did that in Deadpool too lol Deadpool has mentioned Ryan Reynolds and they had his people front cover shot at the intro to the movie even though Ryan Reynolds plays Deadpool in the movie
In the original stage production of Arsenic and Old Lace, a character played by Boris Karloff said that he killed a man for saying that he looked like Boris Karloff

Shit, this could be a recorded visual story of some sort.
He even has the same little man bob as Prince Adam...
That central tooth is a dead giveaway
Something horrifying like that I fear
I thought that was always implied. With rare exceptions like Being John Malkovich (anything meta like that) the actor never exists in the movie's universe.
Also why so many are star struck and succumb to his cringe
Same with Johnny Depp in Black Mass and Blow. Val Kilmer as well.
I swear 80% of his career has been a sci-op...
We also need to talk about how he's literally the #2 of an evil cult.
Connery: "Is that who it was? Well, just goes to show, no one's indestructible"
Is this Tony Manero recognizing Sylvester Stallone or maybe even Rocky, or Rocky/Sly recognizing Tony Manero?
However I did manage to miss the filming! π
I always expect Penelope Cruz to say: You mean this is a Tom Cruise too?
Benji "Sure thing, Tom Cruise!"
Baddie "Your Tom Cruise mask is fooling nobody. Remove his mask! Well well well, we meet at last Ethan Huh... wait, Tom Cruise still?"
Just some kind of acknowledgment!
Some really good films though.
βThat guy looks just like the actor Tom Cruise!β
Thanks for another decade of nausea.
Oh wait, I am!
