Like the A321XLR is already doing on the transatlantic, Qantas sees the plane allowing it to do more nonstop routes from Australia into, for example, Southeast Asia where there is not enough demand for a larger widebody aircraft.

Easy to generalise but airlines always have different use-cases → XLR over generalised more often!

Qantas have unique peculiarities: SYD MEL slot constraints at peak times (need >A320); want to utilise same aircraft for long sectors (baseline A321 → payload restricted) & short SYD-MEL-BNE runs!

One nuance: they'll use XLRs on international, just not longhaul international. Includes NZ, Indonesia, Pacific, etc (basically any international they currently fly B738s on).

It's great to see Qantas refurbishing its 737-800s even though these planes are scheduled for retirement within the next decade. Many airlines wouldn't bother given they are slated for retirement.
