An URL shortener made by Kagi would only last while Kagi stays in business.

Yes, and it sucks for sharing.

I think we've all learned nothing is forever on the web, the site could disappear too. But if I'm sharing a quote, I'm not expecting them to go back to it 4y later. They can screencap if it's important.

Could have a toggle for people who need it forever, though.

I have never liked the implementation of this and am annoyed when it's forced upon me, like when Google does it without asking (fortunately refresh fixes it, but I didn't know about that for a while). The fact that it garbages up URLs is icing.

Isn't it frustrating when you click on a link only to get a 404 error?

Having additional intermediary steps just increases the chances of this happening.

Besides, modern messaging apps and social media platforms typically only display previews or truncated URLs anyway.

Not sure how much interest I have in getting sucked into an uninvited devbrain debate over a simple 'I prefer short links'

Never had an issue with shorteners, but if it fails, I have many alternatives.

In general I think we went wrong adding telemetry & every other gd'ed thing to urls.
