A thread for 1Ls on grades:
One of the things that some law students think after getting their grades is that doing well or poorly suggests innate ability (or its absence) in particular fields. If you get an A in Torts and and a B- in Contracts, you'll say, well, I should be a tort lawyer. /1

If that includes you, a thought: That is not the way things work, in my experience. Your grades overall do, I think, reflect a level of skill in legal analysis under pressure. /2
All these things can impact exam performance. They don't mean you are good or bad *at that field.* /4
And for what it's worth, my lowest grade in law school was a grade I received in several classes. Among them: Criminal Law and Procedure, which I now teach. /end
I often wish I'd gone to law school.
