I assume the act of casting mark anchors some sort of metaphysical aspect of yourself to the spot it was cast, so it doesn't necessarily have to persist. that pure conjecture tho

It could follow Hellraiser/hellbound heart logic where you leave a piece of yourself (bodily fluids or something) on that spot and then when the recall spell is done, your body is violently and gruesomely deformed and reformed in the spot of your mark.

As the counter part spell is “Recall” I think it’s fun to think that the potion creates a magical memory.

When you Recall it recalls the memory of drinking the potion and transports you to that place.
