This feels really sad :( I get it (and an underdiscussed effect of national language policies) but it makes me sad to think this association overwhelming other more personal/community-based ones (esp since the PRC doesn't own Mandarin!)
It would involve extra effort because of the fanti but children's lit and teaching materials from Taiwan are excellent. Would feel less tainted maybe? The science on the advantages of bi-lingualism and academic achievement is also very compelling...
You realize that I am just trying to go the route of the op in understanding the parents here? If the parents feel that the Chinese language has been tainted by the PRC government, then using TW teaching materials might feel less tainted to THEM.
