It is really interesting that we have now seen two severe cases with this version of #H5N1 after seeing many mild human infections in the US over the last year both related to exposure to birds and cows. Is this chance or a signal that there is something about D1.1 that is more dangerous?

For now, it certainly seems to add to worries some researchers have expressed about D1.1 potentially being more dangerous than the B3.13 genotype spreading in dairy cows. As Mike Osterholm told me for my story earlier this month: “D1.1 is the one I worry about.”

Big fan of your work but this influenza picture keeps showing up & it's structurally incorrect- NA has a stalk that makes it nearly as tall as HA, it doesn't sit on top of the membrane like that, even if the stalk has a deletion
