Apart from housing, everything in country towns (especially small ones) IS expensive compared with cities, and limited options. One petrol station, one supermarket, one telco, wages generally lower (if you can get work). It might balance in the long run but he knows how to target a grievance.

You're referring to very small country towns. Fuel is often on par with cities, many petrol stations, 4 major shopping centres + several independent supermarkets that source locally. Electricity we really struggle with, no choice. Plus, it's a pleasant walk or cycle to work.

I am, but also aware that larger towns are more likely to vote left-ish so don’t think he’s so much talking to those people. I did a trip through NW NSW a couple of years ago and was impressed with so much, but noticing many things lacking (services esp). I think that’s the crack he’s poking at.

Often in regions it's hard to find quality housing, childcare, doctors, dentists and staff. And often hard for newcomers to to find a friend.
