Sometimes, knowing the specific outcomes in mind that people are for or against is more clear.
The problem isn't one of education. It's one of trust. There is a stark partisan split in trust of our motives.
At least the scientific enterprise clearly isn't.
R&D at USA universities is funded to the tune of $60B/yr by federal and state governments as appropriated by elected representatives.
