I can only imagine! They are pretty dispersed around here when they come. Rare to see more than 2 close together, and a half dozen visible in a view. Solitary birds mostly.

I live in the Columbia Valley in BC, Canada. We got lucky one spring and witnessed a pretty large number of them on the shore of Columbia Lake. It was something else. But yeah, we usually spot them when they're alone. Beautiful birds.

I was living in Kentucky in 2022 and had ducked into a small woods next to a pond for privacy. A blue heron just *flowed* out of the cattails and took off. Core memory.

The blue heron that lives on our property is definitely not this handsome...he is like a run down old fart like me...but his kids do come visit from time to time. He is a grumpy lonely bird and most days just sits in isolation up in his tree. That tree will be very lonely soon I believe.
