The idea of going to Mars was arguably first promulgated by Wernher von Braun a nazi (literal) aerospace engineer The US brought him over during Operation Paperclip to help the US in the space race.

You know he is going to use the 30,000 people they plan to fill Gitmo with, will be used as slave labor and guinea pigs right? They will not be the ones to test everything. It will be indentured servants.
I think about the differences between the Three Body Problem and most Western sci-fis about colonization of other planets very often. Not an accident, that sci-fi space travel stories were so popular during peak colonization.
I think it is more important than von Braun.
I also think about Octavia E Butler's Xenogenesis and how different it felt reading that compared to white guys' scifi that I mostly read before.

That said, if Musk and his buddies want to go LARPing as space colonizers on a delusional suicide mission, let them go. Good riddance.
His Mars initiative was just another lie to con people into giving him government contracts.

A lot of thought went into naming my kid, and "don't name them after a Nazi" was definitely one of the considerations.
