One of the very great hints that hatred comes from fear is that we ease off on how brutal we are to the dead—maybe not out of reverence, CERTAINLY not out of respect.
Just out of the understanding that wherever they end up after this, they can't hurt us or our people anymore.
Not at all the point of your post, but my mom's eulogy of her dad, titled "damn kids" brought down the fucking house at my grandfather's funeral, because it acknowledged that he was an ASSHOLE. He had good qualities, and didn't do any genocides. But it was still a relief to acknowledge it.
