Some photons from my driveway photon trap from last year.
The California Nebula in Perseus, a relatively "close" emission nebula (~6,000 trillion miles). As seen from us it's about 5 times or so larger than the full Moon appears in the sky—but it's too dim to see naked eye.

So it's a long exposure to reveal such a dim object.
Over a considerable angle of the sky.
So.... did you paint out all but one of the blindingly bright stars?
There's nothing painted out.
