An owl once sat in my tree
At night when most birds cannot see
When the morning sun rose
He was found by some crows
And their caws caused the owl to flee
I canβt remember the author, and I may have it a little off, but I love that poem!
This bird was indeed somewhat distressed. It was being harassed by a mob of maybe 20 crows. Most of them moved on after a bit, and without moving it settled in for a long afternoon nap.
We had one in our backyard a couple weeks back. Took the dog out for her evening constitutional and we hear this crazy screeching. Looked up at a sight a lot like yours. I think ours was a juvenile given the racket they were making, drawing all kinds of attention.
Blue Jays and squirrels warn my wife and I in the backyard when there is a Cooper's or Red Tailed Hawk about. Usually doesn't take me long to spot it once the alert is given.
It really is amazing how birds and animals will provide a warning to any of us who take the time to listen to them.
who cooks - who cooks for you? We have one who has been hanging in the yard for about a year, and lately I've been hearing a great horned too. Which might explain why I haven't been hearing our friend the cook as much lately. . .
Their alarm calls for an owl are different than their alarm calls for a hawk. I was convinced this was something out of the ordinary β probably an owl but could have been a racoon β and so went out to figure out what was bothering them.
(My local murder's alarm call for the neighbor's cat sounds sarcastic as hell. Hawks? Bit of a big deal. Raccoons? Everyone cares about raccoons in the springtime...)
Interesting! Going to pay more attention to my crewβs calls. We have a ton of red tail hawks, so I always assume theyβre bickering, but maybe sometimes itβs something else.

(You are not alone - and it had to be posted...
I'll go quietly now)
And that stare is a challenge: βCome at me: Iβm wearing the pelt of the last one to try that.β
