F**k. In Oz we lost independence of the Research Council for a while which funded according to government set guidelines (community benefit, research excellence etc) with independent peer review when the minister decided he needed to sign off on all grants and cut ones he didn't like. It was awful.
The distraction strategy of running an anti-woke crusade as opposed to having actual stated economic & social policies does seem to be their approach. When they were last in the number of parliamentary sitting days was at an all-time low, so they obviously didn't have much they really wanted to do.
For those outside of academia, the Dept. Education thing is extraordinary interference.
I am not allowed to accept grant funding if the sponsor gets a say over what I publish. That's important. It protects me from outside pressure to tank results that are politically or financially inconvenient.
Universities cannot survive without this funding. These grants employ tens of thousands of researchers, and brings bring billions of dollars into their institutions. The indirect costs literally keep the lights on. I can't even.
Ok guys, what can we do? I'm serious. Stopping NIH and NSF grants (and more coming, I'm sure) is apocalyptic for US science, universities, research institutes, small businesses, CROs... The ramifications for the economy alone are devastating.
What the fuck?! I missed the part about needing permission to publish papers funded by the department of ed. Madness. I’m working on a project funded by them, and hell if I’m going to have my research censored by these fascists.
Surely they are not so much stopping research entirely, but pausing it so that they can restructure the apparatus of scholarship in America to meet their own ends? That seems a logical step when setting up a dictatorship.
Confused Brit here: I don’t understand what the point is of halting health research. What’s the Trumpian logic behind this one? Why does he have a grudge against medical researchers?
I think they just don't support science at all anymore because it might somehow uncover inconvenient truths for them. That and it gives them more money to funnel into getting the military ready to attack civilians
Remember when the GOP complained researchers were wasting money and pointed to a study on fruit flies (not knowing fruit flies are used in a lot of genetic research)? I bet this is why, they are going to unscientifically review things and pull money from things they don't like or understand
There has always been some anti-science political sentiment but bi-partisan support for keeping the innovation engine running. I hope this is just a flex, not a trend. TBD.
Which is to say, 77.3 million Americans voted for this, and another 3 million who voted for Biden-Harris in 2020 decided to stay home and let it happen.
Graduate students nationwide just had their funding ripped from them. I hope they take the correct lesson from this, and don’t start obeying in advance. It’s a small hope, but a hope, nonetheless.
the same day people are losing their minds over the Chinese lapping us in AI and a week after China successfully sustained a fusion reaction for over 15 minutes.
they talk a big game about “standing up to China” then go and shoot our public research institutions in the kneecaps 💀

Liars or incompetent.
Like, in Brazil, universities have constitucional autonomy to teach and do research and even the president can't interfere in what they're doing.
Okay. Yeah.
Maybe we can do a social media campaign where we buy drinks for scientists and post selfies?
Or storm the capital.
I’m down for either

Really scary times.
Starve American universities &…we’re gonna get Ramasmarmy’s H-1Bs, members of China’s intelligence LARPing as academics, etc.
Some *said* they didn't believe he would do any random horror they were asked about.
Some were naïve, some lying. But not ignorant.

Hi Carl! We followed each other at the other place.
I work at UWMC in HSCT. Do you think the UW will suffer from the stoppage of Federal money?
The FHCC is likely to lose lose 10’s of millions. Our poor research patients.
I can’t believe this is happening.
Thank you for answering,
