There are two levels of wink and nod going on in this piece.
Here's the first.
“Hey this obviously inferior thing to save to time. Oh, but you know, take tons of time to do it carefully and not in an inferior way.”
Once you grant people permission, they'll cut corners under time pressure.

How many people who are so eager to save time on a review that they use an LLM to summarize their own notes are going to take the time to install a local LLM? Versus how many will think "well, I'm in a hurry and how would anyone ever know?"
This is profoundly irresponsible.
"This workflow has helped me to reclaim countless hours in my schedule: I used to spend half a day on one manuscript; now 30–40 minutes suffice if the paper’s methods are sound. If there are serious flaws, it’s even faster."
He's telling on himself now.
I defy anyone to in half an hour adequately understand, synthesize, and respond to a paper that may represent a year's work or more from a team of scientists.
and that’s all I’m gonna say about that.
This one? I have no idea. Maybe LLMs are already doing the reviewing. Below, ChatGPT o.1's assessment.

This one seems a bit more nuanced FWIW, but he's already claiming in 2024 to use it in writing both reviews and editorial feedback.
I guess he can say that LLMs help him publish commentaries in Nature.
Good job slacker peers, maybe there is some truth behind the right's disgust with academia?
And insulting to the broader community who need to rely on peer review because they don't have the expert knowledge.
(Thank you for a thorough unpacking of this piece)
(The author makes a point of saying that you should download a local LLM to avoid this issue. But I don't think many people will do it)
