When kids were young and an ice cream van chimed, wife and I would tell them it meant they'd run out of ice cream. When eldest was 17 with mates round, ice cream van chimed. He said "why are they always out of ice cream?". Great ridicule from mates. Should have come clean sooner

I’d like to make it clear that this is a result of my own childhood experience rather than a criticism of other parents.
I find it interesting how it’s mostly self-policing: kids seems to largely know how long to keep it going with each other.
