Back in the 90s HMV used to accept returns for exchange without a receipt. They were more expensive than our local indie shop but had far more choice. So, I would regularly buy a CD from the local shop at the lower price then return it to HMV to exchange for the one I wanted. - ThreadSky

HMV didn't care, they bought everything sale or return - if they didn't sell it they could send it back to the record co. Small local shops were firm sale with no send-backs. Deeply unfair.

I worked for HMV in the 00's and definitely didn't. Someone threatened me because I'd not take a somehow badly scratched CD apparently bought the day before (no receipt), and another had a Woolworths price sticker on it. Neither accepted, one was thrown at my head.

I spaffed almost all of my first wage packets on music in HMV. CDs cost £15-£17 in 1990. Once I was earning more, I'd march in on my Friday lunch break, stack up several discs in my arms, then head to the payment counter. Felt like a king, but it was senseless waste. Sold most at a loss years later.

Back in the day, HMV were charging something like £40 for the new Cod but £20 if you traded in the latest Medal of Honour. The modern set one.

Friend of mine bought it at a Cex for £17 across the street and then traded it in to the HMV. All to save £3.
