Without going into specifics, we have around 2,000 cameras. I have been involved in investigations for just about every level of law enforcement from local to federal.
If you know a specific location and time of where someone was, even if you don't know who they are, it's SUPER easy to track them forward to see where they went and backwards to see where they were.
We have a map with the locations of all our cameras. I assume NYPD does as well. Whether you're going forward or backward, you follow them on a camera. When they leave the camera view, you use your map to check the cameras in the direction they were headed in at the timestamp you last saw them.
It can be time consuming depending on how many people you have helping you and how long of a time period you have to track them, but it's super easy to do.
