When I was a kid the elementary schools went out and put signs on the sidewalks telling kids to find another route if the school found deadly icicles. You wouldn't be in trouble for being late if it took you longer because of one. The kid rumour was that a kid was killed.

When I worked on Michigan Ave in Chicago I would sometimes be late because the sidewalks were closed due to ice falling off the Hancock.

i used to live in an old 4-family 2-by-2 house that made icicles like the pic on the left. they would grow so long i could reach them from the ground and break off impossibly long spears - used to give them to the neighborhood kids to play with but unfortunately no one ever put an eye out lmao
