Context is exactly what your comment lacks I'm afraid. The country's finances and public services are wrecked. Money needs to be found and they are very limited on options where to get it. If you keep doing what you've always done you'll always get the same result, and that's not sustainable.

1. To stimulate growth; create money, invest it and tax the result. The government can borrow money from itself, and thereby create an increase in income. 2. If you discount that option (maybe you don't want to inconvenience bankers) you could tax the wealthy. 3. Last resort: make the poor pay.

The govt does not borrow from itself. Gilts incur interest payments, and currently that runs at 8% of spending, about the same as we spend on education. The idea of growth as a tax revenue generator is good but it takes time. We don't have 10 years, and it's not guaranteed.

Whatever the detail, the fact is that claiming they're doing well, when they're patently not, plays into the hands of Reform. They have done nothing visible and positive. They have done plenty visible and negative. Potential Reform voters will see nothing that has improved. Donors and lobbyists...

Stuff like WFP and the benefits shake-up is poor optics I agree, but they are generating savings we desperately need and the biggest problem is people who are obsessing on those and ignoring the big picture.

I wonder it the delta between the pre-election hope and the post-election reality (on multiple levels) has distorted things somewhat (and I say someone who recently found out my organisation was being abolished and my job, pointless by all accounts, at risk).

Maybe, but I think it's mainly an inability to blame the Tories for the mess we're in whilst expecting Labour to fix it all in 8 months. Many of us predicted this is what would happen, and sadly it is. Might as well just give up.

I think blame is complex too (beyond the obvious ‘last administration’ logic)…i do agree about the unrealistic expectations…but these are borne from fear, exhaustion, desperation, need etc (all valid reactions). Sadly we live our lives via (?) 300 character posts, newspaper/website headlines…(1/2)

(2/2) and radio/tv sound bites. There is no appetite for dialogue let alone complexity (at the population level)…people demand/need answers/results and their attention is gained by those making (false) promises predicated on simple solutions.

This format doesn’t, as I say, lend itself to nuance. No doubt the Tory administration (2010-2024 and previously) perpetrated myriad grievous offences on the vulnerable. I voted for Starner in the leadership race, and advocated for him for the first 6 months in power. He is head and shoulders the tories on the intenational stage. But I can't tell the difference between labour and the tories in terms of domestic policy, to me that really matters.

I know what you mean. I think he's chasing centrist/populist policies because the polls say that's where the votes lie. The left will always hate him because he's done what they never could, but he does need to improve the optics if not to lose the centre too.

He doesn't need to improve the optics, he needs to improve his policies, and most importantly stop hammering people who genuinely need help. He's lost the centre, is fighting for the same voters as the tories and reform. Instead of courting the centre ground, He's abandoned us, and our families.
