So - vast majority go up in income quite quickly and will therefore be paying more taxes. Those that leave quickly and are on the lowest wage, are unlikely to be using the most expensive public services (NHS etc) as they're young (this prob includes those who don't feature in the offical stats)?

I don’t think it’s entirely about people on the lowest wages leaving. Often it’ll be graduates getting a job in say hospitality and then getting a higher paid job a year later (like many British graduates do)

It depends on the type of immigrant. For example, Muslims have a much lower employment rate than native Britons, largely because Muslim women have a much lower employment rate than native British women, something expected in Muslim culture.

EU nationals definitely did bring their family members with them. We just didn’t call them dependants, we just called them EU nationals here under Freedom of Movement. Maybe the family size is smaller on average but they definitely didn’t abandon their family to come here.

yep - almost all visas (dependant, work, student, anything) are NRPF by default. only caveat is NHS which (along with schooling) is not classed as public funds under immigration law (despite this, you can expect to pay about £5k in nhs surcharges over a 5 year visa on top of your visa fees)

i work in an industry that values, and will search globally, for highly skilled people. because of those skills, and a competitive global market for those skills, they come here on high salaries, and... never get on a deliveroo bike.

good piece but not great that it refers in very vague terms to a "loophole, now closed" - allowing people from nigeria to somehow bring more dependants than others. surely this is no more mysterious than "they applied for their kids and ukvi decided to grant the visas"?

or perhaps the loophole is supposed to be simply that people could apply for dependant visas? either way, i'm not a fan of people being painted as using loopholes, where "loophole" almost always means "they followed the rules presented to them and fulfilled the eligibility criteria on offer"
