so apparently this is a windows and m-audio usb interface driver compatibility issue with no fix other than to get a new usb interface that isn't m-audio 🫠 (the problem kept happening so i looked it up to see if it was an issue others were having)

nothing quite like recording an audition while you still have a voice (scratchy throat which feels like it's only gonna get worse over the next few days, considering how dehydrated i am no matter what i do)
