well, b) we can discount as pointless then. On a) I don't understand why, because the costs of doing the merger will outweigh the first 5/10(?) years of savings and then there's the larger matter of trying to merge organisational cultures. And I forgot about opportunity costs.. Lots of them.

Other problems...some unis still go down (bad for all unis, where do remaining students end up going?) ...plus no English student number caps; so more free market swashbuckling for bums in seats anyway

The end to the student number cap will - I'm sure - be seen as the beginning of this particular and sweeping change in the sector. The mid-tier of universities could rightly do without the RG hoovering in clearing again.

Unlikely of course..it's all about "widening access" of course....Not. Corporate greed does not belong in universities.
