I would add to that pathetic victim blaming America seems to revel in by adding that under their bullshit logic, Margaret Thatcher, the British government and the British people were responsible for the Falklands War by allowing Argentina to invade the Falkland Islands.
The US actually provoked Japan to attack Pearl Harbor by a very thorough sanctions regime affecting a wide range of strategic materials. Formed a pretty close alliance with the U.K. too, tho that had its limits before PH — US wouldn’t promise to declare war on Japan if _our_ colonies were attacked.
I would not disagree. There was some miscalculation in thinking that sanctions alone might be enough to compel Japan to back down, but the extent of the backdown required meant that this was never likely.
What’s wrong about it? US believed Japan was part of a proper rather than formal alliance with the other two Axis powers. Took determined steps to weaken it & pressure it to change its course in fundamental ways. Overt conflict was a logical consequence, but there was some reluctance about it.
You're leaving out the obvious reality that Japan was a very aggressive and expansionist imperial power. That countermeasures were implemented obviously doesn't mean that they were provoked into attacking Pearl Harbor.
Not excluding that at all. It’s why the US interpreted the Tripartite Alliance as such a threat & tightened the economic screws on Japan, at the same time as rearming at a breathtaking pace in 1941. Hope was to compel a Japanese strategic retreat, but the risk of provoking an attack was underpriced.
Taking measures against an aggressive imperialist power are not provocations of that power.
It's a basic misunderstanding of what provocations are. You make the term meaningless.

The US was 100% right to sanction Japan.
