I’ve been rewatching Code Lyoko, and having fun doing it. My highest praise for the show is that I think it’s one of the best shows at setting stakes. In season 1 and 2, the only thing preventing the heroes from defeating the bad guy is their desire to save one person. - ThreadSky

It’s weird, it’s maybe the only show like this that works because, not in spite of the fact that the main characters are children, making selfish decisions. The person they’re saving is initially thought to be a hyper advance AI (Different implications nowadays)

Any reasonable adult would, very early on, make the choice to shut down the machine that is threatening the lives of the town/the world at times, but the MC, and the others are risking it all stupidly to help her.

This works especially well to me because they acknowledge how dangerous and ridiculous this is at times. They’re able to undo it, but early on, one line is “I don’t want 1000s of people to die just to save me”

As the show goes on, the stakes change because the villain spends its time trying to put itself in a better position, limiting the heroes ability to simply shut off the machine and be done with it.

I don’t love everything about the show, but this aspect is wonderful.
