The first band I ever saw live was Soft Machine at the Country Club in Belsize Park in April 1969. Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers and Mike Ratledge.

One of the best nights of my life. I was 16.

I was nine years old. Whoever introduced it mentioned The Monkees, which got me very excited as their series was being rerun on TV at the time. My young mind was disappointed to find no Monkees, but a weird looking guy in a wheelchair who sang funny. Of course, I love RW now.
