It may be too soon to say, but in the 1930s, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act contributed to a global trade war that worsened the Great Depression. Trump’s tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada could lead to similar economic fallout, as history shows trade wars often provoke aggressive retaliation.
