It’s got a little Everly Brothers (what I wouldn’t give for some more close vocal harmony in the verses but some of us don’t have singing siblings), and all that early rock tone but also definitely a guitarists who’s heard Pete Townsend.
I’m kinda in a power pop moment now. I think it was kicked off by @artofcoop.bsky.social posting a cheap trick song I hadn’t heard yet. There’s always more deep dives to be had in old music. Even if you have a lot of knowledge like me.
I bought this awhile back and it's been INVALUABLE. I grew up listening to rock radio in the 80s and 90s, I've heard Cheap Trick -- but going thru the albums, wow. I love so much more of it than I don't. And I knew a fair bit going in!
That famous band photo in the open booklet really is a brilliant one. It conveys so much personality, iconic really.
Some people know how to mug for the camera or commit to a look.
I truly wish someone would have broken it down for me when I was a teenager: "You say your two favorite bands are AC/DC and The Beatles, yeah? Why the fuck aren't you listening to some Cheap Trick?" Would have saved me a lot of time.
I hadn’t heard them do anything I like this much till this cover and I like this VERY much (I’m notoriously bad at liking any music the young queers like).
It’s so funny because I think of 79 as a year I know really well musically. I’ve got pretty deep knowledge of 2Tone ska, extremely deep knowledge of emerging goth scenes. Here comes Synth pop. Motörhead’s blowin up. We’ve got Halen 2. And yet there’s always another corner to explore
I’m not gonna touch that hahaha since I plan on guesting on Junk Filter podcast again soon. But yeah I prefer this one myself too. It’s VERY different. That much I can say.
