The idea of appeasement through commercial cooperation did work well with Russia, didn't it? Cooperate on what? The destruction of Ukraine? China is already benefitting decades long from externalization of production from the west by building its military and technology through it.

Totally. I mean, it's not as if they invaded and colonized Tibet, destroying much of its culture and heritage. Or as if they have similar aims for Taiwan. Or the Philippines. Or even as if they're persecuting Uyghurs. Or as if they're engaging in cybercombat with us. No menace - just benevolent.

I assume you read the essay. The argument doesn't rest on any notion that China is a utopia with no imperial ambitions.

The current policy of both parties presume the US should be the sole superpower. Hell, they consider it an existential imperative.
